Sonya Yoncheva will return to Milan's Teatro alla Scala in 2018 for two highly anticipated engagements. Ms. Yoncheva debuts in the role of Imogene in a new Christof Loy-directed production of Bellini's Il pirata with performances on June 29 and July 3, 6, 9, 12 & 17, 2018. The work has not been seen on the La Scala stage since 1958 when the famed Maria Callas starred in the same role. The cast also includes Piero Pretti as Gualtiero and Nicola Alaimo as Ernesto, with Riccardo Frizza leading from the pit. Tickets and additional information can be found at the following link.
She has previously been lauded by critics for her debut in another prominent Bellini role - Norma - at London's Royal Opera House earlier this season:
"... she pours out an unceasing flow of lambent tone, ample enough to lend stature to her Druid priestess, while just flexible enough to run around Bellini’s coloratura. Sung so beautifully, her Norma becomes the archetypal romantic heroine." (Financial Times)
Additionally, Ms. Yoncheva presents a solo recital featuring works by Puccini on February 11, 2018 with pianist Mzia Bachtouridze. Further details on the programme will be announced in the coming months at TeatroallaScala.org.
