This Saturday, April 6, Bulgarian soprano Sonya Yoncheva stars as the iconic courtesan Violetta Valery in Verdi's La traviata for the opening of the Antipolis Theatre d'Antibes in Southern France. Sonya joins a first class roster of singers that includes Jean-Francois Borras as the lovelorn Alfredo and Luca Salsi as his father Giorgio Germont in a production by Jean-Louis Granda. Earlier this season Sonya sang the role of Violetta in this same production at the Opera de Monte-Carlo to great acclaim. Later this month Bulgarian soprano Sonya Yoncheva makes her house debut at the Opera Theatre d'Avignon in a new production by Paul-Emile Fourny of "Romeo et Juliette," bringing her vivid portrayal of the title heroine to the iconic opera by Charles Gonoud. The performances, which take place on May 26 and 28, see Sonya performing opposite French tenor Florian Laconi as her ill-fated beloved Romeo, under the baton of Alain Guingal. "Ms. Yoncheva complemented Mr. Domingo beautifully, singing with a rich dark tone. She won over an audience which, of course, had not come to hear her, with her highly flexible voice, blooming top, and winning stage presence. That she held her own with a legend is a testament to her great talent and self-possession. New York was privileged to see her last year in Dido and Aeneas. In this more exposed concert format, stripped of the cloak of stagecraft, she did not disappoint."
