Role debut as Manon Lescaut in Hamburg

On September 9, Sonya Yoncheva will make her eagerly awaited debut in the title role of Puccini’s Manon Lescaut. The concert performance will also be her house debut at the Staatsoper Hamburg. Francesco Ivan Ciampa will conduct, while Brian Jagde, Kartal Karagedik and Tigran Martirossian will appear in the other main parts. There will be two more performances in Hamburg on September 12 and 15.

Sonya’s originally scheduled debut as Manon Lescaut at the Metropolitan Opera in 2020 and later at the Bayerische Staatsoper earlier this year had to be cancelled due to the pandemic. It is the first of several new Puccini roles for the soprano, with Madama Butterfly being her following Puccini debut in a future season. Other notable operas by the composer from Lucca in Sonya’s repertoire include Tosca and La bohème (Mimì), parts she has performed on all of the world’s leading stages such as the Metropolitan Opera, Teatro alla Scala, Paris Opéra, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Wiener Staatsoper, Bayerische Staatsoper and Staatsoper Berlin.
