Sonya Yoncheva returns to “Iolanta” in Baden-Baden

On April 17, Sonya Yoncheva will assume the title role of Iolanta at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden. The one-off concert performance is part of the Baden-Baden Easter Festival and will be led by Kirill Petrenko, with the Berliner Philharmoniker playing and a cast also including Mika Kares, Dmytro Popov, Andrey Zhilikhovsky, Michael Kraus, Margarita Nekrasova, Anna Denisova, Victoria Karkacheva, Dmitry Ivanchey and Nikolay Didenko.

Sonya Yoncheva made her role debut as Iolanta in a new production at the Opéra national de Paris in 2016, receiving acclaim from the New York Times for her “clear and focused” voice, “yet with a vibration of youthful feeling at its core”. She subsequently reprised it at the Metropolitan Opera in 2019, when her portrayal was described by the Observer as “particularly moving” and her “loveliest Met performance”.

This is Sonya Yoncheva’s second collaboration with the Berliner Philharmoniker at the Baden-Baden Easter Festival, following her star turn as Desdemona in a new Bob Wilson staging of Otello conducted by Zubin Mehta in 2019.
