“Madama Butterfly” in Munich
Following her widely acclaimed role debut at the Wiener Staatsoper in June, Sonya Yoncheva returns to the title role of Madama Butterfly, this time at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich. Sonya performs in Wolf Busse’s historic staging under the baton of Daniel Oren. Freddie De Tommaso is Pinkerton, Annalisa Stroppa Suzuki and Boris Pinkhasovich Sharpless.
According to the press, Sonya’s debut as the Japanese Geisha in Vienna was “a triumph”, “a Cio-Cio-San that sweeps everyone away” (Kurier) and that “has everything the role demands” (Standard).
After Mimì in La Bohème and the title role of Tosca, this is Sonya’s third Puccini role at the Bayerische Staatsoper, where later this season she will return singing the title part of Bellini’s Norma.
