Sonya Yoncheva Returns to Gran Teatre del Liceu in “Madama Butterfly”

Sonya Yoncheva makes a much-anticipated return to the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, taking on the iconic title role of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly.

Building on her acclaimed Liceu debut in a solo concert and her celebrated portrayal of the title role of Norma in 2022, Sonya now embodies Ciò-Ciò-San in a stunning production directed by Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier, with Paolo Bortolameolli leading the Orquestra Simfònica del Gran Teatre del Liceu. Matthew Polenzani as Pinkerton, Annalisa Stroppa as Suzuki, and Lucas Meachem as Sharpless are sharing the stage with her in the other leading roles.

With this Madama Butterfly, Sonya will wrap up the Puccini centenary, which saw her bringing several of the composer’s heroines to life: Tosca (Royal Opera House London, Caracalla Festival Rome, Ancient Theatre Plovdiv, Staatsoper Berlin), Mimì in La Bohème (Opera Sofia, Varna Opera Festival), and multiple performances as Butterfly (Staatsoper Berlin, Varna Opera Festival).
