Sonya gives “outstanding performance” as Tosca in Rome and London

Sonya Yoncheva shone in the title role of Tosca in two European capitals in July, for her return to the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London and her debut at the Caracalla Festival in Rome. You can read here below what the press has to say about Sonya’s stellar performances:

“Sonya Yoncheva is a wonder, a magnificent Tosca”
Francesca Romana Moretti, Quarta parete

“Tosca, it is a known fact, is a primadonna opera. In Rome, the prima donna is there. And she is Sonya Yoncheva, with her voice rich in overtones, a mellow middle register and a penetrating top, her phrasing always icastic, with a magnetic stage presence (just like Magnani). She sings a “Vissi d’arte” of intense emotion.”
Fabio Larovere, Connessi all’Opera

… Sonya Yoncheva gave an outstanding performance, displaying a lush, full-bodied middle register with soaring, confident high notes. (…) … the Bulgarian soprano was able to shine in the most intense moments, with incandescent high notes, as in the famous “quella lama gli piantai nel cor”. In the first act, Yoncheva was scenically convincing in the role of the jealous, love-struck woman, while in the second act, she showed all her theatrical temperament, demonstrating a commanding stage presence and a deep understanding of the character.”
Davide Olivero, GBOpera

“Sonya Yoncheva as Tosca played the role of the traditional diva to perfection especially when enacting all her character’s insecurities and jealousy in Act I. Her ‘Vissi d’arte’ was a deeply touching prayer and sung with considerable sorrow about her plight. The stabbing was impressively staged with her vehemence (she spat out Tosca’s words ‘E avanti a lui tremava tutta Roma!’) as affecting and effective as her forgiveness for the vile seducer Scarpia as she removes the crucifix from her neck and places it on his corpse with those two candles either side of him.”
