September performances at Wiener Staatsoper
Sonya Yoncheva returned to the stage of the Wiener Staatsoper on September 6 as the title heroine in Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta, following the triumphant premiere of Evgeny Titov’s new production this past spring.
After an intensive summer period – with many performances in less than two months across eight different concert programs and five roles – Sonya experienced acute physical fatigue, which made her sing and breathe with great effort. She was therefore unable to appear at the Vienna Gala on September 7 and also had to cancel the rest of the Iolanta performances. She shared the following message with her audience:
“My body said STOP and I will listen to it this time! I am sorry about this situation and I send my excuses to my beloved Viennese audience. I cherish all your support!”
Sonya is planning to return to the stage on September 21 for a concert at the George Enescu Festival.
