“La Traviata” at the Arena di Verona

On August 7 and 19, Sonya Yoncheva returns to the Arena di Verona and to one of her most celebrated roles, that of Violetta Valéry in Verdi’s La Traviata. While Sonya’s past appearances at the famed Italian amphitheater have included the gala performance Opera in Love in 2020 and a 2013 Verdi Gala for her festival debut, this Traviata will be her first opera performance at the Arena.

Sonya has sung the role of the Parisian courtesan at theatres such as the Metropolitan Opera, Paris Opera, Royal Opera Covent Garden, Zurich Opera, Bayerische Staatsoper and in a new production at Staatsoper Unter den Linden for which she received a rave review in the German newspaper Die Welt, proclaiming her “the finest Violetta since Maria Callas” and “possibly the best Traviata in the world at present”.

The upcoming performances in Verona will be conducted by Francesco Ivan Ciampa. Michele Olcese’s new production will also feature Vittorio Grigolo as Alfredo Germont and George Petean as Giorgio Germont. ZDF/3Sat will film the August 19 performance which will be telecast on September 5 at 22:15h on ZDF and on September 11 at 20:15h on 3sat.
