New production of “Don Carlos” at the Metropolitan Opera
Sonya Yoncheva will perform Élisabeth de Valois in a new David McVicar staging of Don Carlos at the Metropolitan Opera conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin. The production which will open on February 28 will mark the first time the Met will put on the five act version of Verdi’s masterpiece in French. Other singers in the cast include Matthew Polenzani in the title role, Jamie Barton (Eboli), Etienne Dupuis (Posa), Eric Owens (Philippe II) and John Relyea (Grand Inquisitor).
On March 26, the last performance will be broadcast Live in HD by many movie theatres all around the world.
Sonya made her role debut as Élisabeth de Valois in the five act version in French in a new production of Don Carlos at the Paris Opéra National in the 2017/18 season. This will be her fifth Verdi role at the Met, where she made her house debut in 2013 as Gilda in Rigoletto and later returned as Desdemona in a new production of Otello as well as in the title parts of La traviata and Luisa Miller.
