Role debut as Maddalena in “Andrea Chénier” at La Scala

Sonya Yoncheva adds to her repertoire another Giordano role. On May 3, she sings for the first time Maddalena di Coigny in Mario Martone’s staging of Andrea Chénier at the Teatro alla Scala. Sonya appears in five performances under the baton of Marco Armiliato, who leads a cast that also includes Yusif Eyvazov and Jonas Kaufmann in the title role as well as Ambrogio Maestri and Amartuvshin Enkhbat as Carlo Gérard.

There is hardly another soprano today who has made the works of Umberto Giordano a specialty like Sonya Yoncheva, who earlier this season made her debut as Fedora in a new production at La Scala and subsequently reprised it in a new staging at the Metropolitan Opera. She is also regularly performing Stephana in Siberia and is starring in the first ever DVD/Blu-Ray release of the Verismo piece, published on the Dynamic label.

With the Teatro alla Scala, Sonya enjoys a fruitful collaboration which also saw her appearing as Mimì in La bohème, Imogene in Il pirata, the above mentioned Fedora, the Season Inauguration Gala A Riveder Le Stelle and various concerts.
