Sonya Yoncheva brings “Rebirth” to Aix-en-Provence
On 14 July 2026, Sonya Yoncheva will perform for the first time at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, appearing in concert at the Grand Théâtre de Provence with Cappella Mediterranea and Leonardo García-Alarcón.
The concert marks a particularly meaningful return to Aix for Sonya, almost 20 years after she was a member of the Festival’s Académie in 2007. For her first appearance on the Festival’s main programme, she brings Rebirth, one of her most personal and acclaimed concert projects.
Recorded for the album of the same name and first performed at the Salzburg Festival in 2020, Rebirth has since been presented at leading venues including Teatro alla Scala, Staatsoper Unter den Linden and the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona.
Conceived as a journey across centuries, cultures and musical traditions, the programme brings together Renaissance and Baroque works from Italy, Spain and England with traditional and popular songs. Music by Monteverdi, Cavalli, Stradella, Purcell, Dowland, Caldara and Gibbons appears alongside Spanish and Latin American repertoire, Leonardo García-Alarcón’s reconstruction of an aria from Antonio Draghi’s El Prometeo and the Bulgarian traditional song “Zableyalo mi agǎnce”.
Moving from intimate lament and poetic reflection to the rhythmic energy of dance, Rebirth explores the connections between early music and the songs that have been passed down through generations.
