Interview for Vogue China

Following her performance of “Hymne à l’amour” at the opening of Rolex’s Oyster Perpetual: An Oyster Story exhibition at Shanghai’s West Bund Dome Art Center, Sonya Yoncheva gave an interview for Vogue about her art, the enduring appeal of opera and her relationship with the stage.

She discusses the ability of the human voice to communicate emotion beyond linguistic and cultural boundaries, the importance of bringing an individual perspective to classical roles and her own transformation from a shy child into a performer who feels most free on stage. Sonya also reflects on opera’s place in an age of increasingly short attention spans and speaks about an immersive opera project she is currently developing to introduce the art form to new audiences.

She furthermore addresses Rolex’s commitment to supporting emerging artists and draws parallels between opera and watchmaking: two long-standing traditions that remain alive by continually responding to the present.
